Make Your Own Flip Flops (Gladiator Style)

You will be the envy of your friends when you know how to make your own flip flops. I know the little girls that I had help me with this project LOVED them!

DIY Sandals for KidsDIY Sandals

There are hundreds of styles that you can create when it comes to making your own flip flops. The following are the basics.

DIY Sandals

Supplies

  • Sandal Base (perfect if your straps broke!)
  • Strips from an old t-shirt, cut
  • Beads (optional)
  • Scissors

1)  If you are working with a new pair of sandals, remove the straps by taking a pair of scissors and cutting the strap and the base on the front side.  Now, flip the shoe over and simply pull the rest of the strap out from the back side. This pair of flip flops are super inexpensive.  You can get them from the Dollar Store, Michaels Craft Store and other retailers for a couple of bucks so don’t feel bad about cutting them up.  Honestly… I’m not even sure I could wear them new as the plastic would end up putting blisters all over my feet.

2)  Create a loop on the top side of the sandal. Cut three 7″ strips of t-shirt material for these loops. This is how you will create your own straps and place the fabric through them to tie around your foot. You’ll want to knot it on the bottom side.

This is what the bottom side of the sandal will look like with the knots.

Here is what the top of the sandal will look like with all 3 loops.

3)  Once you are sure the loops are how you want them, cut the extra fabric from the knot and secure it with E6000.  Let dry overnight.   Once it’s dry…you are ready to decorate your sandals anyway you wish.

DIY Sandals for Kids

Here is one option:  A braided strap

Supplies

  • E6000
  • Sandal
  • 3 Pieces of Old Tshirt, cut into strips

For the particular style you are simply braiding your strap prior to threading it in the loops.

Option 2:  Beaded straps

Supplies

  • E6000
  • Sandal
  • 2 Pieces of Old Tshirt, cut into long strips
  • Assorted beads

Thread the 2 t-shirt straps through the top hole of the sandal.  Next, add as many beads as you want.  Lastly, wrap around your ankle and tie off.

Option 3: Confetti straps

Supplies

  • E6000
  • Sandal
  • 3 Pieces of Old Tshirt, cut into strips

Take two of the strips and thread them through the top loop of the flip flop.  Next, take the third strip and cut it into 2′ sections.  Tie the sections around the other two strips creating a confetti effect.  Snip off the extra material.  Continue wrapping around ankle.

I love making videos for you. I feel like it helps to better understand the process than images, right?!? If it helps let me know and I’ll continue to make videos for projects from here on out!
