Are you looking for an easy and inexpensive way to celebrate the Red, White and Blue of the USA? Well then this mason jar votive is the perfect DIY for you! These votive candle holders can be changed to match any theme, color or occasion.
I love decorating with red, white and blue, especially for Memorial Day and July 4th get-togethers at the lake. These fit in perfectly with a few of my other patriotic DIY projects on the site such as the American Flag Pallet, American Flag Clothes Pin Wreath and the Upcycled American Flag Suitcase….
Do you see a theme here?
This project marries the fun colors of summer with the soft flickering ambiance of candles. You know me and my love of decorating with as much texture as I can.
It’s pretty simple so let’s get started!

Mason Jar Supplies:
- White Rice, uncooked
- Food Coloring – I used red and blue
- Mason Jar
- Tea Light Candle
- 2 Bowls
- optional: gloves
Mason Jar Instructions:
Step 1) Separate the rice into two bowls, reserving a bit of the rice as the “White”.
Step 2) Add in several drops of red food coloring in one bowl and blue in the second bowl, mix thoroughly. I always use gloves when working with food coloring to avoid staining my hands.
Step 3) Grab your mason jar and place blue, white and then top with red rice to obtain your Red, White and Blue look. Notice the white stripe is not as wide as the others. Having different stripes helps give the mason jar votive more character, don’t you think?
Step 4) Place a tea light candle in the center of the red rice and cover with a lid. When you are ready to light the tea light remove the lid. Be sure to place the lid back on so the rice doesn’t become soggy.
Step 5) Be sure to keep the jars flat, they will mix if shaken but I wanted to use my jars again so I did not want the rice to be permanent.
These Mason Jar Votives would be a great addition for any celebration to tie in a color theme. How cute would they be for a rustic wedding in the bride’s colors? There is nothing like candlelight to make a celebration special and every wedding budget could use some money saving decor like these little cuties!
