Our lake house fixer upper was designed with two main objectives: Â 1) a place to entertain and enjoy with our family and friends and 2) a retreat where John and I can go to recharge from the stresses of owning two very demanding businesses. I can’t wait to share with you the vision for my ultimate sanctuary space in my lake house retreat.
This picture is still fairly early in the building process. Â I chose this before picture for a couple of reasons: Â 1) This is the stage in which my design board was created (don’t wait until the very end to create your vision) and 2) I think it’s comical that all three of my children are sitting on the roof (that’s where they get the best wi-fi. LOL)
Here are the elements of my retreat that create the ultimate sanctuary:

My color scheme is:
Benjamin Moore OC-9 Ballet White
Benjamin Moore HC-166 Kendall Charcoal
Benjamin Moore HC-108 Sandy Hook Gray
Because these are all being used outdoors, I chose to use Benjamin Moore Regal Exterior Low Lustre.
Feeney Cable Rail – My perfect retreat will definitely take full advantage of the beautiful lake views. Â This cable rail provides safety but is virtually invisible.
Kontiki Deck Tiles (from BuildDirect) – When looking for the perfect flooring for our master deck retreat, I had to take several factors into consideration:
- 1) the master deck is above a finished room so I needed a flooring option that would not interfere with the ceiling below
- 2) I needed it to be water-proof,
- 3) I needed it to be easy to clean
- 4) I wanted something maintenance free and
- 5) I wanted it to look good.
BuildDirect made the process of picking out the master room deck flooring simple and easy. I was 99.9% sure of the style and color I wanted but if you are not quite sure you can go to their website and choose up to 5 different tiles and they will send you a sample of each to choose from. They want you to have the perfect tile for your project and they know once you get a tile in your hands and feel the durability of the tiles and see how easy they are to interlock, you will be hooked!

This process has not been easy but it has been a labor of love. Taking the time to do it right and with the right products will allow us to enjoy this space for a long time with very little time needed to maintain it. Who wants to be rebuilding a deck in 10 years or remodeling because the home looks worn and dated? If you take the time to truly see your vision and then make it come to life with the right products you will have years of worry free relaxing in your future!
