This DIY Dog Bed came together in just a few hours. If you have a loved one who adores their small breed dog this would make a great gift!
It all began when I saw this piece at my local ReStore for $10! I knew I had to have it and so it came home with me.

Upcycled Dog Bed Supplies
- 2″ Upholstery Foam
- Upholstery-grade fabric (I used Marine Vinyl)
- Upholstery Needle
- Waxed Button Thread
- Buttons or in my case…BLING
- Drill
- 3M General Purpose Spray Adhesive
- Sharpie
- Break away Utility Knife
Step 1) Begin by removing the back of the furniture piece. This is what we will use to attach the upholstery.
Step 2) Figure out how far apart you want your buttons by measuring it out with a tape measure and a Sharpie
Step 3) Using a drill and drill bit, create a small hole where you have placed your mark for your buttons.
Tip: If you project doesn’t currently have a back, you can use pegboard. This is great for tufting because the holes are already pre-spaced and drilled for you.
Step 4) Lay your board with the drilled holes on top of your high density foam. Using your sharpie, mark the holes on your foam so they match up with your board.
My foam piece was not quite big enough so I centered the foam in the center of the board and then filled in the sides (see below)
Step 5) I adhered the foam to the back of the board with 3M General Purpose Spray Adhesive Make sure you match up the holes on your foam to the holes you drilled in the board.
My foam was not quite big enough to cover the entire back so I filled in the sides with Poly-fil.
Step 6) I recruited a helper (meet Chelsea) to help me hold it while I tufted the upholstery. To do this, take an extremely long piece of wax button thread and thread it through the Upholstery Needle and tie it in a knot.
Step 7) Lay the fabric right side up on top of the foam.
Step 8) Start on the back side and thread the needle through the first hole in the board, up through the foam, through the fabric and then through one of the buttons and then back through the first hole, pulling it tight. Repeat in each hole but do not cut the thread…leave it in one piece.
I sanded and painted the DIY Dog Bed with Amy Howard At Home Paint in Graphite
Tip: When you are searching for furniture pieces you want to make sure the bones of the piece are good. As long as everything is solid I go ahead and purchase pieces even if I don’t necessarily need them at that moment!
By removing the door, adding some batting with a little bit of bling and a pillow this outdated 70’s furniture is now ready for your little pooch!
