I love decorating for fall and all that goes along with that.  Pumpkins, corn stalks, and gourds oh my! This year I decided to add some “out of the box” ideas to my fall decor. I use a lot of Modern Masters Paints in my Rekindled Spaces business and their metallic paints are dreamy! So I grabbed a black foam pumpkin and started playing with the metallic paints!

Black Foam Pumpkin Instructions:

Step 1)  Start with a foam pumpkin.  I started with a black one  (You could use any color you want). I love that they come in different colors now, because it makes my prep work a lot easier!

Modern Masters Metallic Paints are my favorite type of metallic paint.  There are other brands on the market but I always keep these on hand.  I use them all of the time in my decorative painting business, Rekindled Spaces. These paints can be used straight out of the jar, thinned with water or  extender.

For my lava pumpkin, I chose to use Antique Bronze, Olympic Gold and Copper.

When mixing the colors, I used 3 styrofoam bowls. I poured each color in a bowl and thinned them with water. You want each color thin enough so that it will drip.

Step 2)  Add thinned metallics to the pumpkin. I took a plastic spoon and starting from the top, started with the Antique Bronze and scattered the colors on the pumpkin. I felt like I was decorating a caramel apple {I wish I was because that is my favorite fall food!}.

You might also try (I will likely do this next time, too) to put the thinned-out colors in squirt bottles (Think ketchup and mustard bottles).  That might be easier for you to control and easier to store for future use.

Step 3)  Add the second color.  Mine was Olympic Gold

Step 4)  Finish with a third color.  Mine was Copper Penny.

Step 5)  Let Dry. This took a long time because I am heavy-handed when it comes to my metallics…the more the better!

Voila! It’s finished and beautiful. One cool lava pumpkin down!
