Our lake house fixer upper is really coming together (see our remodeling checklists to learn more about the remodeling process).  The sheetrock is being installed this week…WAHOO…doing a happy dance!  You know what that means????  I can start adding the “personality” which transforms it from “just another house” to OUR home.  You see, I have been designing this dream home in my mind since we walked in for the first time.  I always start my designs from the central room in the home…in this case it’s the living room.  I call my design style Rustic Modern.  I know that sounds like an oxymoron right?  If Donny and Marie can be a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, then I can be a mix of rustic and modern. LOL

I am beyond excited to share my rustic modern design board with you…my Rustic Modern Living Room.

Clean lines combined with rustic charm describes my rustic modern living room. Yes you can have a room that is both classy and comfortable.

When I design a space, I always start with an element to act as the inspiration…it usually has a pattern and will include the basic color palette I want to use.  In this case it’s the rug.

lake house rug

Now I know there is not much of a color inspiration in this particular rug but my design style tends to be more neutral.   I can always add pops of colors in my accessories.  If you like color, by all means don’t be afraid to throw color on the walls.  Just make sure you have a plan…no one wants to paint a room twice right?  It is much easier to find a paint color to go with your decor than finding decor to go with a paint color…does that make sense?

sherwin williams color swatchHave you ever used the Sherwin-Williams  Color Snap App?  I uploaded the picture of the rug into snapyourcolors.com and it formulated my own personalized color palette based on the colors in the rug…amazing!

These colors are spot on!   I am using grays and browns with gold and bronze accents.  I want the majority of color to come from the outside…the natural colors that come from the beautiful lake view.

lake house wood floor

I love the rustic look of this flooring.  It is an 3/8″ pre-finished engineered flooring which will hold up great at the lake.  It has a 50 year warranty for residential applications.

Now it’s just a matter of picking out your favorite pieces of furniture.  I am in love with this Chesterfield sofa.  I love the regal shape combined with the casual linen fabric…it’s perfect.

living room dark brown barcelona chair

I can’t say enough about these Barcelona chairs…they are comfortable, casual and sexy all at the same time.

Add some more interest with a textured throw.

hard elements

Add some tables and lamps.  I try to mix up the shapes a bit so everything isn’t square or rectangle.

gold accessories
Here are a few of the accessories I fell in love with.  I love mixing the grays with a burnished gold.

throw pillows
And last but not least…Add some of your favorite pillows.  This is what pulls it all together.

So what do you think?   Am I on the right track???   I would love your opinions so please leave me a comment.
