Does your home reflect your personality? I’ve walked in many homes where you get no sense of the people who live there. It’s like walking into a hotel. Our homes are our havens, so when it comes down to it, they should reflect the people who live in them. Today I am sharing two rooms in my lake house fixer upper and my ideas for decorating them to create some personality.
When I stumbled upon what is now our lake house fixer upper, I had a clear vision of what I would do with it if and when it became mine. Fast forward exactly 12 months and 14 days from that first day and my vision has become a reality. All that is left to do is add the personal touches to make our new house feel like home.
I was recently approached by Shutterfly to take a look at their new home décor line. My first thought was “Don’t they only do pictures and photo books?” Don’t get me wrong, I have ordered a ton of their photo books (As a matter of fact, I am in the process of making one for the lake house fixer upper project but I wanted something a little more original for this home.) but I had never heard of Shutterfly Home Decor.
I jumped on shutterfly.com and looked at their new line of personalized home decor. I was both stunned and excited that I was able to select high quality home décor that I could personalize with or without photos. I think what impressed me the most was all of the design inspiration throughout the site which gave me the little push I needed to start personalizing our home.

Ideas to decorating with personality: Gallery Wall
Gallery walls are all the rage right now and Shutterfly has so many good design ideas centered around them. Their customizable home decor made it easy to create “a story” for the focal wall in this room.
When designing a gallery wall, I always start with a couple of anchor pieces and then build around it. Typically these pieces are the focal points of the wall. My anchor pieces are the “Our Family Rules” canvas and the “5 Jayhawks” metal sign which I designed on Shutterfly.
I added our family initial, a couple of pallet arrows and some string art we made when the boys were little and voila…a room full of character and personality.
Ideas for decorating with personality: Guest Room
When I design a space, I always ask myself “what story do I want this room to tell?”
This is the story I envisioned for this room:
- I wanted this space to feel comfortable…not stuffy.
- I wanted to make sure our friends and family feel welcome every time they stay.
- I wanted to fill it with personal touches so you really get to know who we are.
Shutterfly also offers bedding that can be personalized with your favorite images, colors and designs. I ordered a beautiful duvet cover with matching pillow shams that I was able to personalize with “Welcome To our Home”.
I selected a navy pillow from the site and personalized both sides with a couple of fun lake sayings.
Who needs an alarm when you’re at the lake right?
Now when grandpa comes to stay I know the pillow will be turned this way…LOL
A couple of personal touches on the nightstand really finish it off. First, this beautiful candle stresses the importance of family which is a common theme in our home. I also thought it would be fun to add the lake latitude and longitude points into the décor, so I customized a small acrylic tray to hold jewelry, loose change, etc…
