Let’s face it as much as we would LOVE to have a organized home sometimes it just gets out of hand. With this DIY Key and Mail Organization System you are able to customize it to fit the needs of your family in the space that’s right for your home.
You may remember I vowed to become more organized this year. While I’ve been taking baby steps…seriously it’s hard for me to be organized as much as I know I should be. With running my business, Rekindled Spaces, managing a home and throw in the boys activities, back to school and my husband John running his own business, LawnWorx, it’s no wonder I’m a mess!
But, I wanted to create a “zone” in my home where everyone could see it in the morning. This allowed the boys to know what was going on, where to put the mail so we could find it {we’ve had problems with the mail disappearing!} along with what was for dinner, who was picking up who, etc. Not to mention we needed a place to hang all of our keys!
So with a little bit of creativity and time I created a system that I could use in my home. However, I wanted to share this DIY Organization System with you too because I know so many of you have asked for something that could be customized for your needs and space.
Alright let’s get you organized!

Organization System Supplies:
- 3/4” Purebond Plywood board in Maple cut: 12″ x 24” L
- 1” x 3” Maple Trim board cut: 24”L
- 2-4 cabinet knobs
- 2-3 Appliance Pulls
- Stain or Paint
- Readyscrew D-Ring Hangers
- Veneer Edging
- Wood Glue
For this project you are going to need a variety of tools. So let me list them out for you to make sure you have on hand.
Organization System Tools:
- Drill
- Drill bit
- Level
- Ruler or Tape Measure
- Nail Gun with Nails
- Mitre Saw (or have Home Depot cut the boards for you)
Organization System Instructions:
1) Using your Mitre saw, cut your plywood to 12″ x 24″.
2) Cut your 1″ x 3″ trim board to 24″L
(Diva Tip: Home Depot can cut your board for you!)
3) Measure your veneer edging and cut it 1/2″-1″ longer than your piece of wood. Don’t worry…once they are glued on you can trim off the excess.
4) Using a hot iron and a lint-free cloth or piece of masking paper (what I used), iron over the veneer and apply it to the edge of the plywood. (As if you couldn’t tell I got all the supplies that I needed from Home Depot!)
5) Paint or stain your wood pieces.
6) Clear-coat each piece with a polyurethane. Let Dry. I used a spray varnish for this small project.
7) Lay your 2 boards on a flat surface and attach the trim board to the plywood using your Ryobi Nail Gun. Come in from the back of your plywood nailing every 2-3″.
8) Lay out the spacing for your cabinet pulls. Mark the spot for each pull lightly with a pencil or chalk and drill the appropriate holes. To make life easier start with a small drill bit and to just start your hole and then follow up with a 3/16″ drill bit so that your screws will attach to the hardware.
9) Attach two D-rings on the upper back of the plywood piece. This is a great way to attach it to the wall. Measure 1″ from the top and 1″ from the side. Where those two points intersect from both sides is your drilling point.
10) Attach your new DIY Organizational System to your wall! Make sure you secure it into a wall stud or use wall anchors.
