Are you living in a world of beige? Do you need to infuse some color into your home decor? That is exactly how I felt about my family room. The couch is tan, the walls are beige, the floors are hardwood, my hearth is a beige stone, the mantle is a stained reclaimed timber, and the recliners are brown leather…could it get anymore boring?
Today I am revealing my new and improved family room. This makeover required no construction, no painting, and no mess. It took less than 2 days to complete and even though the majority of the accessories were recycled from other rooms in the house, it feels new to me!
Here is the before picture…what do you think? Can you believe I design for a living and this is my family room? I guess I am like the cobbler who has no shoes. lol
Well not anymore! I partnered with BuildDirect to showcase their new line of Mohawk Rugs.
My Family Room Inspiration:
After looking at all of the beautiful choices at BuildDirect.com, I chose the Mohawk Home Wanderlust in Bora Cream. I ordered the rug and the down under-rug mat online and received it within a few days.
I always advise my clients to select an inspiration piece when picking colors for their home. My inspiration piece for my family room is this rug…look at all of the colors I can pull from.
The first thing I did was lay out the under-rug mat, leaving it away from the couch for now.
Next, I laid out the rug. It came rolled up so I let it settle for a couple of hours to flatten out. The under-rug mat was about an inch longer than the rug but it was super easy to cut using a pair of sharp scissors.
Once the rug was flat and the mat was cut, I tucked the edge under the legs of the couch.
Look how much better it looks by simply adding the rug.
Next, I added this amazing 3-tiered coffee table. I love the rustic top combined with the contemporary base.
Then came the infusion of color with the pillows. I pulled the dark smoky blue, the rust, the camel and the chocolate. I love to mix textures in my accessories. You can see that in my choice of pillows.
I chose to keep the hearth fairly neutral so the focus would remain in the center of the room on the couch and the rug.
I added a few accessories to the coffee table. I brought a small amount of blue to the table. Don’t get so caught up on every color matching perfectly and please don’t be afraid to mix the metals. I love to combine gold, silver and bronze.
I balance the other side of the hearth with an old trunk, a basket of pine cones and a chunky candle holder.
On the mantle I added a lantern, a couple of books and a silver sphere.
And here it is… I am so happy with the outcome. It is warm and inviting yet cozy and comfortable.
I balanced out some of the accessories in our antique bookcase to by adding some blue frames. I am waiting for our new family picture to frame and hang on the wall to finish off the look.
Here is a little video I put together talking more about my family room makeover.
