As many of you know, I just returned from the Interior Design Market in Las Vegas and as promised, over the next few months, I will share tons of information with you about current trends in home decor.

Today we are going to talk about an accent color that is making a HUGE comeback….METALLIC GOLD!

Sidebar:  Have you ever noticed how fashion and home decor trends typically coincide with each other? Gold jewelry is really BIG right now.

You can use gold in simple accent pieces or on a larger scale to make a big statement.

This post is going to serve double-duty…I am going to show you how to upcycle your outdated upholstery by painting it in a modern color pallet.

Supplies needed to paint upholstery

Here is the before picture of the chair.  I picked these up from a garage sale and you can tell the previous owner had started to paint them but quickly gave up. LOL

Instructions to paint upholstery

chair before removing cushion1)  Begin by removing the seat cushions from the chair frame (if possible).  If the cushions are permanent, don’t worry, paint the frame first. Let dry.
Chair in paint booth2)  Lightly sand the wood frame of the chair using a medium sanding block and wipe clean with Krud Kutter

Note: Amy Howard’s At Home paint instructions say no sanding required. You all know that I am a professional painter so I believe in sanding. Feel free to skip this step if you like but I always scuff up anything I am painting.

3)  Mix 4 parts paint with 1 part water when painting fabric to keep it flexible.Chair with Graphite paint step 1

4)  Apply one coat of paint to the seat cushion using the Paint Brush. Let dry.

5)  Lightly sand. Repeat and set aside.

6)  In a well ventilated area, spray the frames of the chair with the Amy Howard Furniture Lacquer in Golden Egg or comparable spray paint. (Latex or oil enamel can be used in place of spray paint). Let Dry.

7)  Repeat Step 7.

8)  Once everything has dried, Re-install seat cushion…Voila!
