I’m addicted to thrift store shopping. As a matter of fact, I visit them more than I care to admit! I think that it’s because of a strong desire within me to create something out of nothing. I have a fault a trait that allows me to see the beauty in everything I look at, which includes thrift store finds! At times I think it’s just pure brilliance….but, that’s just me!

Thrift Store Finds- How To Make Gold-Dipped Baskets

Baskets are another one of those items that you can bank on finding at every garage sale and thrift store you visit. I love working with them because they’re so versatile! They can be spray-painted a solid color, striped, color-blocked, stained and in this case…Dipped! It’s super simple to make dipped baskets…let’s get started.

These Plain Jane baskets were a thrift store find for $2.00 a piece.  They are tall (more vase-like) which makes them perfect for “dipped baskets.”

Supplies to make over your thrift store finds:

Begin by prepping for spray paint by taping off a hard line with the Frog Tape.  I may have gone a little overboard on the tape, but always better safe than sorry.  For this effect, I only want spray paint on the lower half of the basket.

Using  Rustoleum Metallic Gold spray paint, apply 2 thin, even coats of spray paint, letting each coat completely dry in between.

Remove tape {which for some reason is by far my favorite part!} and voila! You have updated two thrift store baskets to look like they’ve been dipped in gold.

Not a fan of gold???  This technique can be done in any color. Here are a few ideas to get your imagination working:

    • Bright, fun colors liven up any room.
    • Put a smaller vase inside the basket itself and fill with fresh flowers for a welcoming entryway.
    • A larger dipped basket serves as pretty storage in the bathroom.
    • Customize dipped baskets for newlyweds and give as gifts for their new home.
    • Place a wine bottle {unopened of course!} to welcome new neighbors to the neighborhood.
    • Smaller baskets make beautiful vessels to collect change or for holding writing instruments.
