I was recently working on the design team for the hit show, Restaurant: Impossible in Orlando, Florida.  Our mission was to give a once-thriving restaurant, Peppino’s a much needed makeover.  As a team, our vision for the space  was “rustic charm.  This is tough to achieve when you are bringing almost all new elements into the space.  With only 36 hours to accomplish the task, I reached out to my friends at Modern Masters, Inc.  I knew they would have the products I needed to create instant charm using their rust kit.

Here is the finished picture of the restaurant.  To see a before picture and more behind-the-scenes photos click here.  It is seriously one of my favorites we have done.  I used the rust and patina kits on the room divider and the shutters.

Our first stop was the ReStore Habitat for Humanity store where we found bi-fold doors for $5.00 a piece.  We used them to make a room divider which hid the back kitchen from the rest of the restaurant.  They looked just like these doors which lacked old world charm to say the least.

The D9 crew built our room divider for us while we were working on another project.  Once it was built, they set it into place and let us take over.

Instructions for Instant an Old Look with Modern Masters Rust Kit:

Step 1)  Paint 2 coats of Acid Blocking Primer (included in kit).  Let Dry (I am super sorry, I forgot to take that picture. lol)

Step 2)  Paint 2 coats of blue latex enamel over acid blocking primer.  Let dry several hours.Want to make something new look old? Love the look of Rust and Patina? Learn how to instantly age anything using the Modern Masters Rust Kit.

Step 3)  Apply one coat of Iron Paint (found in rust kit) in a haphazard pattern, leaving some of the blue exposed.  I tend to like it to look dry-brushed.  Let dry.

Step 4)  Repeat step 2.  Make sure your 2nd coat of iron paint is going over your 1st coat.

Step 5)  After your 2 coats of Iron Paint are thoroughly dry, spray it with the Rust Activator (also provided in Rust Kit).  Wait 5 minutes and spray again.

Note:  There is a spritzer cap that comes with the kit, but I prefer to put my activator in a bigger spray bottle.

Warning:  This step is extremely difficult!!!

Step 6)  Leave it alone.  Let it sit overnight and I promise when you return you will be amazed!

Step 7)  Seal it with Permacoat Extreme (provided in the rust kit)
