Instructions:

Step 1)  Mark each end of your 5′ boards for 45 degree angles.  I like to mark them so I don’t cut them the wrong direction.

Step 2)  To cut your 45-degree angles, simply adjust your mitre saw to 45 degrees and cut along the line your marked.

Step 3)  Mark each of your 5″ boards at 6″ from the top and then every 12″

Step 4)  Using your drill and small drill bit, make pilot holes

Tip:  As a general rule, a pilot hole should be the same diameter as the root of the screw (the center core just below the threads). This allows the bulk of a screw to enter a board without splitting the grain, yet still allow the threads to do their work of pulling two boards together to form a joint.

Step 5)  Using a drill with screwdriver bit and 2.5″ screws, fasten the 18″ boards (the rungs) to the 5′ boards and your marks.

Step 6)  Stain or paint.  Let dry.
