As you know, I’m a big fan of crate projects. It just seems like such a waste to use a crate only once, so I really enjoy giving them new beginnings as other things. Another thing I’m a big fan of is furniture with storage. Especially in a living room setting, it’s nice to have a spot to stash frequently used things like throws and pillows for lounging later. This storage ottoman made from a crate really does triple duty – it’s a place to rest your feet after a long day, a storage spot, and an easy way to spruce up a room! Give this one a try – I bet it will be one of your favorite crate projects too!

Supplies to make this crate project:

  • Wooden Crate
  • 1/2″-3/4″ plywood
  • 1/2″ x 3/4″ x 6′ pine board
  • Poly-Fil
  • Fabric
  • Staple Gun
  • Measuring Tape
  • Wood Glue
  • Casters or Table legs (optional)
  • Spray Paint or stain (optional)

Step 1) Measure the length and width of the top of the wooden crate.  Tip:  If you are making more than one, make sure to measure every crate before cutting the wood top.  Each crate varies in size.

Step 2) Using a mitre saw, table saw or circular saw, cut the plywood according to measurements.  Set aside.

Tip:  If you don’t own one of these saws mentioned above, you can ask your local hardware store to cut the wood for you.  If you choose this option, make sure you have your measurement ahead of time.

Step 3) If you are staining or spray-painting your crate project, do it now so it can be drying while you finish the top.  I chose to paint the inside of the crate as well.  Let dry.

Step 4) Cut a 1/2″ x 3/4″ pine board into the following measurements:

  • 2@ 15″
  • 2@ 9.5″

Step 5) Make an inner box to keep the top from sliding off the crate.  Attach with screws or finish nails.

Tip:  If you use screws, make a small pilot hole in the wood first to keep the boards from splitting.

Step 6) Lay the fabric right side down.

Step 7) Place Poly-fil on top of fabric.

Step 8) Lay plywood smooth side down on top of Poly-fil.

Step 9) Fold fabric over the inner box lip and attach with staples.

Step 10) Repeat on the other side.

Step 11) Fold in corners and staple.  I fold my corners with the same technique I use to wrap a present.

Once you get all 4 sides stapled, flip it over and admire your work.  All that is left to do is place it on top of your crate.

Step 12)  Flip your crate over and add your casters or furniture feet to the bottom of your crate.  This is an optional step.  You can definitely leave this step off.

Flip your crate back over, add the top and voila!
